Stay Calm and Don’t Admit to the Debt Right Away.
When a debt collection agency calls, the most important thing to remember is:
🚨 DO NOT admit to owing the debt until you have received written validation.
Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), you have the right to verify and dispute the debt before making any payments or discussing financial details.
Why Shouldn’t You Admit to the Debt Immediately?
❌ The debt may be inaccurate – Debt collectors sometimes mix up accounts, inflate balances, or pursue debts that aren’t yours.
❌ Scammers may pose as collectors – You should always verify that the debt is real before providing any personal or financial information.
What Should You Say Instead?
✔️ “Can you send me a written validation of this debt?”
✔️ “I prefer to communicate in writing.”
✔️ “What is your name, company, and contact information?”
✔️ “I do not acknowledge this debt until it is verified.”
➡️ Under the FDCPA, collectors must provide a Debt Validation Letter within 5 days of first contact.
What Should You Avoid Saying?
❌ “Yes, I owe this debt.”
❌ “Here’s my bank account info.”
❌ “I’ll pay right now to make this go away.”
❌ “I don’t have money right now.”
⚠️ Collectors may use what you say against you to pressure you into payments or extend the time they can legally pursue the debt.
